History of the Choir

Shifnal Male Voice Choir (the district part was added at a later date) was formed in October 1957 at a meeting in the White Hart Inn in the Town.

Although the Choir is now Nationally famous it suffered a major setback in it's early days which nearly saw the end of it. Arthur Roberts, a well known Organist and Choirmaster at St. Andrews Church in the Town was chosen as the Choir's First Conductor. Sadly he never took up the post as he died on October 14th.

After a number of temporary Conductors, Jim Lewis was appointed as Conductor. The Choir grew quickly, in numbers and reputation, and only three years after that shaky start Jim Lewis led the Choir to their first major success at the Chadsmoor Music Festival.

The Choir in 1975 appointed Peter Davies as Musical Director and under his leadership the Choir became well known, winning many Music Festivals nationally, these included the premier English Music Festival held in Blackpool, Kerry Eisteddfod and Rhymney Valley where they beat the cream of the Internationally renowned Welsh Choirs.

The Choir has traveled abroad to Germany, France and also Malta where they competed in the first Maltese International Competition where they reached the Grand Final. The Choir in recent years has won the Biddulph Music Festival, and were runners up in the BBC Shropshire Radio Choir of the Year Competition.

The Musical Director is now Anne Clark who with her enthusiasm and love for music has moved the Choir into another era, introducing modern music for example Back to the Sixties and the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody while not forgetting the traditional male voice choir music.

Shifnal and District Male Voice Choir for over forty years had competed in competitions very successfully and raised considerable amounts of money for charity. The main ambition of the Choir is best summed up in what has become it's motto.

'SPREAD HAPPINESS EVERYWHERE YOU GO WITH SONG AND LAUGHTER'
